Forget about the happy colored lights! Guide to decorate your home at Christmas

Our living room, dining room and hall will be the stage in which we will share great festive moments, so it will be the rooms to which we should pay special attention in matters of decoration this Christmas. Choosing the colors, the ornaments or the decorative elements will become something fundamental that will allow our homes to shine in a special way, with a unique and very personal Christmas setting away from the classic - and tired - intermittent lights of colors.

Selection of colors

Getting the right color combination is essential for a successful Christmas decoration. Depending on what you want to convey, and the character of each one, we will opt for some solutions or others. For those who want to give a touch of sophistication and glamor to their Christmas decoration, the combination of black and gold is the best option. Black brings a refined and cosmopolitan sobriety, in contrast to gold, which indicates luminosity and elegance.
On the other hand, the use of pure white for all the decorative elements, in combination with glass pieces, will take us to a snowy landscape, very vaporous and suggestive. While for lovers of the Nordic style, red, as an ingredient of contrast with white and woods in light tones, will be the winning composition. Finally, you can also choose something more natural and organic, converting the vegetation - spruce, eucalyptus, holly ... - into the absolute protagonist of the Christmas decoration.

Decorate your main door

It is the first impression your guests receive during the Christmas holidays, so decorating becomes almost essential. You can use crowns, garlands, inscriptions or lights, among other options. Make your own crown using twisted branches forming a circle, knotted with laces and strips of raffia or hemp for environments more natural cut. You can also use a fir base with bows, ribbons and small Christmas decorations in green and red, for a decoration of more traditional style. Opt for balls and glass spheres, instead, to create a more contemporary adornment.
Garlands are another classic Christmas motif, which must be arranged bordering the door frame. More or less leafy and spectacular, the combination of wreaths and garlands will convey a warm welcome to friends and family.

Make your own Christmas balls

If you are a handyman who likes crafts, do not hesitate to make your own ornaments for the tree. Use expanded polystyrene balls as a base to attach the motifs that will make up your ornaments: glitter, strips of ribbons, decoupage ...
Transparent glass or plastic balls will be very useful to introduce small items inside, such as pens, messages written on cut paper strips, artificial snow or small colored balls.
Original trees The Christmas tree does not have to be reduced only to the traditional green and leafy spruce. A dry branch can be used to hang ornaments and lights in contemporary and sober environments. A ladder can also become an improvised tree if we hang ornaments on its steps, while those who do not have enough space can also enjoy their particular tree by composing one with strips of  washi tape  attached to the wall in the form of fir .

Personalize the gifts

The most exciting time of the holidays, especially for children, is when they open the gifts that Santa Claus or the Magi have left at home. Wrap them in a different and personalized way, using photographs to mark who owns the package, indicating the name or initials with bows, or using any of the ornaments that hang from the tree to finish the composition in an original and creative way.
If you have time, spend some time customizing your packages. Children will be fascinated by how well the Three Kings know them, while adults will be surprised by its originality.

Get an Advent calendar

This is a tradition that serves to make a countdown before the arrival of the holidays. In this type of calendars, from the first day of December until Christmas day the youngest of the house open the window of the corresponding date to find a small detail, a chocolate or a message.
You can buy some of the proposals that are in the market or make your own personalized calendar. In case you want to do it yourself, you can use small envelopes that contain the surprise or the message, indicating the corresponding date and pasting them on a board, as in the proposal of the image. Or, you can do it using small boxes to store the details, also numbered, or bags of raffia knotted with a cord of vegetable fibers. The important thing is that there are as many containers as there are days from the 1st to the 25th of December. Thus, children will have a guaranteed surprise every day.

Decorate the fireplace

If you are one of those lucky ones who have a fireplace at home, you have an exceptional structural element that you should decorate with special care and curiosity. Adorna the embouchure with a composition of candles of different heights and branches of spruce, olive, eucalyptus or magnolia to create an attractive still life, simple and natural.
Add also the traditional Christmas socks, one for each member of the family, to keep inside some of the gifts or candy for children. If you do not have a fireplace, you can decorate a console or a window sill in the same way, you will surely have a similar effect.

Dress up your gala table

One of the most endearing moments of Christmas is when we gather around the table to enjoy one of the feasts prepared with more affection and enthusiasm of the year. For this reason, dressing it also becomes something very special. Bring out your best crockery, glassware and cutlery, accompanying table linen with table or individual paths that highlight the chosen dishes. In the center, a still life that occupies the entire length of the table, using a vegetable base of branches or leaves that serves as a flat support for the rest of decorative pieces.
Place the cutlery and glasses following the established protocol. As for the cutlery, they are always available from the outside in, depending on the dishes you are going to serve. The forks, on the left and the knives and the spoon, on the right. If you plan to prepare a formal table, you should know how to place the glasses: on the right, a little more behind, champagne or cava, then white wine, red wine and water, located on the left. The bread plate should always be on the left, like the napkin, unless you place it on the plate.

Details to customize the table

Its staging is essential so that family food is a special moment. Draw the perfect scenery with small personalized details that seduce your guests. Indicates the position of the guests with a small card with its name knotted to the napkin ring, made with rope and twigs. Decorate your glassware with stars tied at the foot of the glass or create a unique still life with seasonal fruits, nuts and candles as a path, running the entire length of the table.
Do not miss the candles. Although it is an element that we should enjoy all year, at Christmas they acquire special prominence. The candles convey a suggestive warmth, essential in these parties. Use them to decorate any corner, from the dining table to the center, a dresser or shelves.
