New technologies and trends in construction industry

As technologies for building materials advance, engineers are also discovering new ways to apply them in construction systems, from project design to the construction site.
The development and implementation of new technologies in the civil construction sector results in gains in productivity and quality, optimization of construction time and savings by reducing rework and waste of materials.
It is also worth remembering that, after the period of instability in the Brazilian economy, the trend is that the civil construction businesses also resume the rhythm of some years ago.
For this, it is necessary to be attentive to technological innovations, especially those that are already disseminated in the foreign market and have not yet been brought to Brazil.
In today's post we will present some of the new technologies that are being used, mainly, in steel frame constructions , which use galvanized light steel - recyclable material -, structural panels in OSB Home and do not require the use of water during the work.

Augmented reality

Augmented reality (AR) is a technique that can be used to unite the real world with the virtual.
This technology that allows the insertion of virtual objects in the physical environment - shown to the user in real time with the support of some technological device - has been replacing the models once and for all during the steel frame construction project.
With the use of augmented reality, construction professionals no longer need to use hard copies to make the experience of the project models real.
The three-dimensional projection allows the customer and future owner of the steel frame property to view rooms and external areas ready, well before the start of the work.
Just taking the customer to the construction site or even presenting projects on the floor plan can cause frustration and not present the real impression on the environment.
The use of augmented reality also prevents the client from having to visit the construction site frequently, being able to follow the evolution of the project from inside the construction company's office.

Steel Frame construction in modules

Modular construction is considered a strong trend for years to come and has been increasingly used in steel frame projects abroad.
This technology allows the construction of a house or building off-site, that is, prefabrication takes place within the companies responsible for construction.
It uses the same building materials and is designed to the same standards as conventional construction. Once ready, the modules are taken to the construction site to be joined, completing the construction.
This technology limits environmental disruption by supplying construction materials gradually - as needed - and turning construction into a logistics exercise.
Among the advantages of building in modules are sustainability issues, reduced movement of heavy vehicles at the construction site and even less waste of materials.
Buildings or houses built in 70% by modules allow greater optimization of the movement of goods in “just in time”, both for manufacturing and for delivery.
In 2015, the Chinese construction company Broad Sustainable Building - present in the United States and the United Kingdom - completed the construction of a 57-story skyscraper in 19 business days using the modular construction method, which fits perfectly for the projects they need be delivered in a short period of time.

Air and moisture barriers

Moisture in buildings can come from various sources, such as rising damp, which comes from the soil due to faults or lack of barriers, or moisture rising from the walls, often caused by the porous structure of construction materials.
Thus, there are already several technologies to prevent the action of air humidity in buildings, which prevent the progressive degradation of the walls, ensuring greater protection to the finish.
Some products designed to create a membrane impervious to the air and moisture barrier in building walls are already being used on a large scale in the construction industry in the United States.
The StoGuard , for example, to be installed in construction, it is capable of conferring an additional layer of protection against the harmful effects of humidity.
These impermeable air barriers are applied to fluids that offer superior protection against moisture intrusion and air leakage, providing significant energy savings in hot and cold climates.
They are installed on the walls of the building, regardless of the region or climate where the property is located. The system offers continuous control over the air and humidity that can affect the building.
Why Waterproofing Building Materials Are Important
In Brazil, waterproofing is often not treated with due importance in buildings, but it is necessary to be attentive to invest in these new technologies.
According to the Brazilian Institute of Architecture Development (IBDA) , the cost of implementing a waterproofing system in the building represents an average of 1 to 3% of the total cost of the work, and those involving the repair of waterproofing damages may up to 15 times greater than if it was foreseen in the project and carried out during the work as a preventive measure.
In addition, the useful life of a property depends directly on an efficient waterproofing system.
With the retreat of the Brazilian economy, looking for technological solutions is essential for those who wish to remain competitive in the market.
A survey by the Civil Construction Industries Union of Minas Gerais (Sinduscon-MG), in partnership with the Fiemg System, shows that 60% of entrepreneurs in the construction sector have technology investment plans , with over 50% of new investments they may occur in information technology, technologies for construction site infrastructures and in structural systems.
